PROJECT TOPIC:
The LEBEL project deals with education and awareness, aiming to create useful educational materials to teach people with autism, Down syndrome or intellectual disabilities what are appropriate behaviors in emergency situations, such as natural disasters or car accidents.
PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT:
This project aims to produce useful materials to teach people with autism, Down syndrome or intellectual disabilities how to behave in emergency situations or natural disasters, should they find themselves alone. Among the behaviors addressed are:
– Communicating with people they can trust;
– Trying to make oneself safe during dangerous situations;
– Trying to avoid risks present during natural disasters and emergency contexts.
MATERIALS PRODUCED DURING THE PROJECT:
AAC Emergency Dictionary: A dictionary containing terms and definitions pertaining to natural disasters or emergency situations, explained in a way that is easily understood, and supported by pictograms in AAC. In this way, the dictionary can be used with people with autism, Down syndrome and intellectual disabilities.
Distance Learning Portal: Educational materials such as videos, social stories and digital books created with the aim of supporting people with autism, Down syndrome and intellectual disabilities in learning how to behave in situations of natural disasters or emergencies (earthquakes, fires, floods, car accidents, getting lost). These materials are created with the support of experts in special pedagogy so that they are understandable to people with the abovementioned types of disabilities.
Digital Library: Contains materials pertaining to natural disasters or emergency situations useful for parents or people working in the field of autism, Down syndrome, and intellectual disabilities.
